Steve Roach: Soul Tones

 Over the last thirteen years (those covered by the new century) Steve Roach he implemented his themes and musical directions: in the continuing deepening of many concepts appeared in the past in his extensive discography, Roach developed all the possible paths of "ambient" music: from the primitivist and concrete moods of "Early Man" and "Kairos" (with shades of epic in "Sigh of ages") to the Berlin's electronics in "Landmass", "Groove Immersion" or "Proof Positive"; from the mystical/esoteric drones plunged in observing of the Buddhist spirit in  "New life dreaming", "Arc of passion" or "Back to life" to those contemplative but not mystical of "Dynamic Stilness"; from the less treated projects in relation with "cosmic" in "Possible planet" to the those tribal-shamanic of "Journey of One" (these aspects were treated better in the collaborations with Serries or Metcalf) up to psychological drones of "A deeper silence" or "Immersion" (series). His recent "Soul tones" belongs to the latter. In these two long suites Roach applies the principle of the drone designed in his ability to arouse a deep reflective state on our behavior.... Steve says ".....it's like a big sigh....infinite in its essence .... "; listening to this musical aesthetics suddenly introduces us into a state of hypnosis where the journey focuses on the primordial and essential characteristics of ambient music: ecstatic effect, subtle and progressive changes of tone and dynamics, a soul which seems to explain. That subtle exploration of the soul through music is one of the most fascinating projections that Roach has faced, since many key episodes in his career come from this direction, but the surprising thing is that Roach seems at a certain point give also the solutions as evidenced by the long-awaited spiritual well-being achieved in the serenity of synth audible at the end of "Resolved".

Negli ultimi tredici anni (quelli contraddistinti dal nuovo secolo) Steve Roach non si è certamente risparmiato sulle tematiche e sulle direzioni musicali: continuando nell'approfondimento di molti concetti già apparsi in passato nella sua estesa discografia, Roach ha battuto tutti i possibili sentieri dell'ambient music: si va dalla vena primitivista e concreta di "Early Man" e "Kairos" (con riflessi di epicità in "Sigh of ages") all'elettronica berlinese di "Landmass", "Groove Immersion" o "Proof Positive"; dal drone mistico/esoterico con incorporazioni buddiste di "New life dreaming", "Arc of passion" o "Back in life" a quelli contemplativi subnaturali ma non misticheggianti di "Dynamic Stilness"; dai meno calcati progetti "cosmici" di "Possible planet" a quelli sciamanico-tribali di "Journey of one" (aspetti meglio trattati nelle collaborazioni con Serries e Metcalf); sino al drone a sfondo psicologico di "A deeper silence" o della serie delle "Immersion": il suo recente "Soul tones" appartiene a quest'ultimi. Si tratta di due lunghe suites dove Roach applica il principio del drone visto nella sua capacità di suscitare un profondo stato riflessivo sui nostri comportamenti, come dice Steve ".....è come un grande respiro....infinito nella sua essenza..."; ascoltare questi dischi è come entrare all'improvviso dentro uno stato di ipnosi guidata in cui inizia un viaggio che privilegia le caratteristiche somatiche della musica ambientale: effetto estatico, modificazioni progressive ed impercettibili di tono e di dinamiche, un'anima che sembra volersi spiegare. Quella dell'esplorazione subdola dell'anima attraverso la musica è una delle più affascinanti proiezioni che Roach ha saputo affrontare, giacchè molti episodi fondamentali della sua carriera provengono da questa direzione, mentre la cosa che sorprende è che sembra che Roach ad un certo punto vi dia anche le soluzioni come dimostrato dal vistoso raggiungimento del benessere in cui si plagia la serenità sintetica avvertibile alla fine di "Resolved".
